Monday Madness
For the past few weeks I've been working ardently in conjunction with some online friends on a project that's very important to me. Before I share what that project is, let me start with a little background.
Sometimes late at night when I can't sleep, my mind drifts back in time to the dark days of Monicagate. I remember the relentless pursuit of the press (both written and broadcast). There wasn't an hour that went by when reporters and media pundits weren't reveling in some new (or rehashed) sorted detail of 'sex in the oval office'. It was, no doubt, the blowjob heard round the world.
The republicans were rabid in their determination to bring down this man who'd dared to allow an 'innocent' young woman wank his willy in the sacred office of THE PRESIDENT. And then had the audacity to LIE about it. Imagine, lying about sex! The shock! The scandal!
While the rest of the world laughed at us, an Independent Counsel was appointed (the devil himself was Mr Ken Starr). An investigation was launched. Heads rolled. Blue dresses were subpoenaed. God forbid this small indiscretion by THE PRESIDENT be allowed to be forgotten or swept under the rug (or off to the dry cleaners). It was imperative that dignity be returned to the office of THE PRESIDENT.
In the end, the claim was, it wasn't about the sex, it was about the LIEs. Lying to the American people, lying to the Grand Jury, lying to obstruct an investigation. So what if the investigation was about sex, it was the LIE that mattered.
Now lets move forward to 2005. To a man entrusted by THE PRESIDENT, and by extension the American people. A man who has used his power, and position to abuse and betray that very trust. His actions may have endangered countless lives and has certainly inhibited the ability of an agent of the CIA to fully perform her job. In fact her exposure was so great, she had to leave her job. He participated in a game of phone tag that resulted in the publishing of the name of an agent of the CIA. While she may not have been a 'covert' agent, she was working on very super-secret (their words not mine) information. And then, he LIED about having done so.
Where is the outrage? Where is the righteous indignation? Where is the demand for swift and just retribution? Where is the party of higher morals and values? They seem to have lost their way to forum.
Instead we hear "But what is it that somebody did wrong if they didn't break the law?" ["Victoria Toensing, a lawyer and longtime Republican who helped write the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982, which is at the center of this case, said Bush is now saying what he probably meant to say when the leak investigation was launched."]
Well excuse me, but if you're going to claim to be the party of higher morals, and old fashioned values , I damned well shouldn't have to point out to you that whether or not one broke the law , there are still some things that are just outright wrong . True being unethical isn't illegal but it's still wrong . What happened to "it's about the lie? Or does that only apply if sex is what your lying about?
Any parent understands the importance of teaching their child about right and wrong. About ethics and morals. So what part of what Rove did was NOT wrong, immoral and unethical? What about the LIE?
For the past few weeks I have been involved in a letter writing campaign demanding that Mr Rove be held accountable for his actions and that the President be held to his promise to fire anyone involved [ source ] in this affair. Anyone INVOLVED, not anyone who committed a crime.
If the President won't hold Mr Rove accountable, then we feel it's time for the people to hold the President accountable. For too long we have tolerated lie after lie (do I even need to mention WMD's) and done nothing. It's time to stand up and be counted.
We (the people) are writing letters to every Congressman/woman and Senator in Washington. We are sending out emails to their state offices and their offices in Washington. Demanding that the President honor his word and hold Mr Rove (and anyone else involved) accountable. As you can imagine this is a very lengthily and involved process. There are letters to be printed, envelopes to be filled, stamps to be applied, then letters to be carted to the Post Office. Yes, I've been quite busy.
I am well aware this may be a pipe dream, but I refuse to continue to sit back while this administration continues to commit the same crime they so passionately went after Bill Clinton for.
This isn't a Democrat-vs-Republican issue. This is an issue about holding people to their word.
I for one, want to see some of that dignity they claim they were going to return to the White House.
